For numerous years, the conventional portrayal of women's involvement in Ottoman/Turkish modernization depicted them in a passive role, ostensibly conforming to externally imposed changes and conforming to prescribed societal roles. Nonetheless, scholarship in this domain, particularly since the 1980s, has illuminated a more nuanced understanding. It reveals that Ottoman women actively engaged with contemporary developments, demonstrating agency, and participating in struggles for rights. This seminar series endeavors to explore both the intra-disciplinary debates among Ottoman women and their transnational connections with counterparts across various regions, encapsulated within specific thematic frameworks. The culminating gathering of this seminar series is designed to scrutinize the contemporary landscape of Women’s Studies in Turkey.
